Val McDermid's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

Hi ! My name is Val McDermid.
I'm a writer of crime fiction. My Vote for the World's Favourite Christie is "The Murder At the Vicarage".
When I was a kid, I devoted books.
I stay still off time with grandparent's on weekends and on school holidays.
And always I run some library books I borrowed with me.
My grandparent are not big readers.
They only had two books in the house. One was Bible, the other one was Agatha Christie's "The Murder At the Vicarage" That's the first book.
I wanted to read more.
I was so excited when I looked inside pages.
So Agatha Christie is dealt more than one book.
Fantastic!!
Then it became my life mission to acquire as many these as I could.
I used to go to the jumble sale and second hand book shop.
But also I had to confess that Christie did lead me to a life of crime.
I wasn't allowed into other library to clear the rest of Christie's where.
So I steal my mother's library tickets, pretending that my mom is too ill to come to the library.
Outstanding my most piteous expression.
'My mom is not well off to get a book, and so I made my way through Christie's and that's on the rest of British crime fiction genre.
So you could say in many ways that one book is responsible for my entire career.
The thing I love about "The Murder At the Vicarage" is the quality of story-telling and quality of plotting.
I don't think I quite grasp at the time I was reading again and again, and again in first time round.
But every single sub plot in a book has a beginning and a developing and a pay off.
It's perfectly constructed, if you can draw a picture of it, below the intersecting arcs , with one big arc, going over the top of all of them. The arc means the story which she never loses sight of, even if all the other staff is going on.
I defined anyone really understand the mechanics of writing crime fiction going by Agatha Christie.
And particularly in this "The Murder At the Vicarage".
"The Murder At the Vicarage" is my Favourite Christie. Should be World Favourite Christie.

Mathew Prichard's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

My name is Mathew Prichard.I'm Agatha Christie's grandson.
My candidate for the World's Favourite Agatha Christie is "Endless Night"
During the late 1950's and throughout the 60's was the time,
when I knew my grandmother who I called nima best.
That means she not only saw all over me, she saw a lot of my friends, and school, university and all our boyfriends , girlfriends.
We all flocked at her house usually at Wallingford on Greenway.
And she got to know a little bit about the beginning of the swinging in 60's, they were called.
She was very inquisitive, she asked my friends a lot of questions.
She asked them what courses for their reading, what enjoy, what do they want to do in their rest of life.
And in 1967 "Endless Night "was published, and although naturally none of our friends were mentioned by name, it became clear to me that she understood perfectly the way we wanted to live our lives and she understood perfectly how weak the occasion to make decision some of which is better than others .
And I think it was a remarkable book, because somebody who is 70 plus could have such an insight into people 50 years or more younger than her, was to my mind the most remarkable thing.
It received wonderful of reviews.
I think everybody other than me was also amazed such a perceptive book could be written.
Without Poirot or Marple, but so psychologically and physically convincing that became my Favourite Agatha Christie.
Vote for "Endless Night" as the World's Favourite Agatha Christie.

Sophie Hannah's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

Hello, I'm Sophie Hannah. And I'm the author of "Monogram Murders".
I think "After the Funeral "ought to be chosen as World's Favourite Christie.
I know it's not one of the best known ones.
But I think it's absolutely brilliant.
For several reasons, and the balance between plot and character, and atmosphere and setting, and dialogues all of the different aspects that makes the novel great.
I think balance of this novel is perfect in the "After the Funeral ".
And the family, dysfunctional family at the heart of the novel is so brilliantly drawn. Agatha was fantastic writing about dysfunctional families.
I think the clan in the "After the Funeral " as possibly the most amusingly and vividly dysfunctional ever Christie wrote dysfunctional family.
And I also write Poirot appears slightly later in this book.
So other characters have a chance so to guess to what happen.
It's almost like the best of both, you have brilliant standalone novel beginning.
And then your favourite character Poirot appears.
And so, so is peeled out by the end of the book.
It's also one of Christie's novels in which the point between very, very simple and very, very complicated is perfectly achieved.
Sometimes Christie's novels are very complicated. Other time rests on one simple idea.
I think "After the Funeral " is the sort of the middle point.
Just complex enough to get, you know serious mystery solvers to give them puzzled to tee center.

And finally Agatha Christie was brilliant at choosing names for her characters.
One of the names of character in "After the Funeral " called Cora Lansquenet. I think it has to be one of the best ever Christie's name.
So that alone is good enough for the reason.
Choose "After the Funeral " for the World's Favourite Christie.
Vote the "After the Funeral " as the World 's Favourite Christie.

Greg Rusedski's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

Hi I'm Greg Rusedski, former world No.4 tennis player.
My vote for the World's Favourite Christie is "Towards Zero"
The reason I like this book so much is because my first cameo role as an actor with actually in this book.
I got to play the part of Merrick, a tennis player who played against the male lead, Nevile Strange played by Greg Wise.
And I was very exciting how the crowded around people watching us play tennis. And the director thought I was quite a good actor.
You actually realized I was a Professional tennis player. So, good job to act! I thought tennis was not bad.
The reason I like this Christie book, is, because the most Christie books, you know, the beginning somebody has done the murder.
With this one, they wait half way through the book until you find out that somebody's been murdered.
Also the psychology of the book is excellent.
It talks about to the lead characters as the children.
And you don't realize whether it's male or female character.
And on the other aspect, I like as well is the murder weapon, is a certain tennis racket possibly.
That I might be using the past.
You know that is a big clue to what happens in this book.
So if you're going to read it, make sure you look at the tennis aspect as well.
So vote "Towards Zero" as the World's Favourite Christie.

David Brawn's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

I am David Brawn. I am Agatha Christie's publisher at Harper Collins.
And my vote for the World's Favourite Agatha Christie book is "The Mysterious Affair at Styles".
This is the first book that Agatha Christie wrote. She did so in response to a bet with her sister. And she came out with the fully-fledged crime novel about Captain Hastings who is injured in the First World War and returned home to the country house, Styles, to recover.
There he encounters a murder.
He called upon an old friend, a retired Belgian detective called Hercule Poirot to helping solve the case.
One of the reasons I really admire this book is that it doesn't feel like the first novel.
The character is fully-fledged and the plot is well-developed.
And it is as good as anything Agatha Christie wrote in subsequent years.
One of the things probably isn't known about is that she changed the ending.
And it is one of the reasons this book was not published until 1920.
The original manuscript has the book concluding a court room.
But Agatha changed it, so the Hercule Poirot would collect all the suspects together and reveal the murderer at the end.
This of course became her trade mark and many of the books followed the same pattern.
The nice thing about "The Mysterious Affair at Styles", although it was her first book, you don't have to read it first.
But it's the great place to start.
It was the first book that I read, that's why I'd like to recommend as the World's Favourite Agatha Christie Book.
Vote for "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" to be the World's Favourite Christie.

Marcus Wareing's Vote for the World's Favourite Christie

Hi, my name is Marcus Wareing.
My vote for my World's Favourite Christie is " Seven Dials Mystery".
Why I discovered "Seven Dials Mystery", I was, when I found this location for this restaurant,
I'm rather just call the restaurant after my name.
We were looking for something a bit of a story. We had to look into the history area, Seven Dials, Covent Garden.
One of the things came up from the head and shoulders above anything else was Agatha Christie.
One of the things I loved about the history of our country and write this country.
The character is very created through the novels.
We found the character called Tredwell, who is very much big part in this novel.
We wanted to base this restaurant through him as a backhouse manager as the character in this book with the English offering food sharing place, there must be like you find in a classic old English house wait see the staffs sharing very closed to the table.
I suppose it's really quite apt about the area was not any with this book all about the Seven Dials which we are now.
Richly just around the corner, you've got the "Mouse Trap" which managed in 63 years.

Just have a look in neighbor and this book about the Seven Dials, just felt perfect full of those characters from this book which names is our restaurant's , Tredwell's.
One of the things I love about Agatha Christie is she really is a sense of a history of past.
She brings some of the most amazing characters to life.
She keeps you in suspense.
She always keeps you on the edge of your seat.
What I really love about Agatha Christie is, when you finished one book, you want to pick up another one.
My World's Favourite Christie, with our staffs, is "Seven Dials Mystery".
If you agree with me, please vote.
